NEW DELHI: At least eight people were killed in the last 24 hours as heavy rains pounded several parts of south and central Gujarat districts, causing a flood-like situation in many areas while over 9,000 people were relocated and 468 rescued, officials said Monday. In Madhya Pradesh, the Met department issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in 33 of 52 districts of the state, while lightning amid steady downpour claimed seven lives in the last 24 hours.
Sixty-four people have died in rain-related incidents in Gujarat since the onset of the monsoon in the state even as hundreds of villages remained submerged after three continuous days of rain.
PM Narendra Modi called up Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel who apprised him about the situation. The PM assured him of all possible help from the central government.
As downpours eased slightly on Monday, scenes of devastation started surfacing in urban and rural areas of Valsad and Chhota Udepur districts, the worst hit. Ferociously flowing rivers flooded houses and shops and killed a large number of livestock while thousands of people watched helplessly as their valuables and belongings were swept away.
In Telangana, heavy rains snuffed out three more lives on Monday, taking the toll to seven, since the weather turned inclement four days back.
Amid incessant rains and a red alert in eight districts, the state government stopped vehicular traffic between Telangana and Maharashtra with police sealing the inter-state border point of Bodhan in Nizamabad district.
Three people were missing in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district after heavy rains led to a rise in water levels of several rivers in Nashik district, while Mumbai and its adjoining areas received moderate showers on Monday.
