IMPHAL: Two young Tamilians settled at Moreh in Manipur‘s Tengnoupal district were shot and killed at Tamu in neighbouring Myanmar on Tuesday, triggering an agitation by the local people that shut down the border town.
Autorickshaw driver P Mohan and trader M Ayyanar were possibly attacked by members of the Pyu Shaw Htee, a militia set up by the Myanmarese junta, sources said. Mohan had got married about a couple of months ago.
The duo had been reported missing around 8.30am, two hours before news arrived of motorbike-borne assailants shooting both in the head at Tamu, around 4km from the India-Myanmar border gate in the Moreh sector. Local authorities sent the bullet-riddled bodies to Tamu hospital.
Officials said there was no clarity yet on a possible motive for the killings.
Moreh houses a mixed population of around 50,000 people, including Kukis, Tamilians, Meiteis, Punjabis, Marwaris and Bengalis. People of Tamil origin constitute the largest group of migrants are engaged in trade along the India-Myanmar border. Six organisations representing different communities submitted a memorandum to the officer-in-charge of Moreh police station, requesting him to ensure justice was done to the slain duo.
