Air India is turning out to be the toughest company in the world to sell

Final countdown

The privatisation process of national carrier Air India is entering the last lap, with the Centre confident of meeting all the defined milestones related to the airline’s divestment. Financial bids could be opened as early as today.

But this was no easy road for AI.

On the block

100% stake in Air India, Air India Express and 50% stake in ground handling company AISATS

The bumps

The airline had a debt burden of around Rs 48,781 cr as of March 2017, which posed a huge financial risk to a buyer.

It has also been losing money for over a decade. In 2016-17 alone, the airline suffered a net loss of Rs 5,765 cr.

Sweetening the deal

Although the criteria stated that bids might pay 15% of the offer value in cash and the rest 85% for the debt, even this 85% is not a requirement, and bidders can pay for the Maharaja’s assets in total cash.

The current proposal

Air India will be transferred to the private owner with a debt of Rs 23,000 cr. The remaining debt will be transferred to the govt-owned Air India Asset Holdings Ltd – a new company that will house the carrier’s assets, like the Air India building in Mumbai, Airlines House in Delhi and properties in housing societies around India.

The video serves as a reminder to the people who believe cabin crew does not do enough. The video already has over 1 lack of likes and 2 million views.
