Delhi gets its new Police Commissioner in Gujarat-cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana

Delhi Police Commissioner

Rakesh Asthana, a senior IPS officer of Gujarat cadre, took charge as the Commissioner of Delhi Police on July 28.

Warm welcome

He was accorded the ceremonial guard of honour by the police force upon his arrival at the Delhi Police Headquarters at Jail Singh Marg in New Delhi.

Ministry of Home Affairs’ order

In an order issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs had said that Asthana, who was serving as the director general of the Border Security Force, would join as the Delhi Police Commissioner with immediate effect.

Appointment

His appointment came just days before his superannuation on July 31. He will have a tenure of one year. This is one of the very few instances when an IPS officer outside of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre has been appointed as the Delhi Police chief.

Other achievements

A 1984-batch IPS officer, Asthana had earlier served as the special director of the CBI. During his stint in the CBI, he was engaged in an unsavoury spat with the then CBI Director Alok Verma with both of them levelling allegations of corruption against each other.

While responding to the police’s post, one user commented that the Delhi Police seemed to be a big fan of the TV show Anupamaa. Another user jokingly wrote that it was the supremacy of Anupamaa.

Notably, the number of Covid-19 cases has decreased in the national capital and other major cities like Mumbai.

The dip has come after the numbers rose sharply, causing fear and panic among people and authorities. Therefore, civic authorities have kept suggesting that people must adhere to the health guidelines necessary to stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Wearing a mask and proper sanitisation of hands at regular intervals have been considered the best approaches to contain coronavirus.
