Bangladesh has snubbed China on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) ahead of Indo-Bangla Foreign Ministers meet in New Delhi on Sunday, and this is viewed as Dhaka’s cautious approach with regard to funding from Beijing.
In a sharp rebuttal to Chinese claims of Bangladesh’s biggest infra project being part of BRI, Dhaka said that the Padma Bridge, which is scheduled to be launched on June 25, is not a part of China’s BRI. It also said that no foreign funds were taken to complete this multipurpose project.
Earlier, the Bangladesh-China Silk Road Forum and the Embassy of China in Dhaka announced to hold an event titled “The Padma Bridge: An Example of Bangladesh-China cooperation under Belt and Road Initiative” on June 22. The Chinese envoy is scheduled to attend the event.
