The state-run weather service reported on Thursday that India received 8% less rainfall than average in June due to a lack of rain in the country’s central regions.

The monsoon, which contributes to about 70% of India’s yearly precipitation and is essential to the country’s $2.7 trillion agriculture-based economy, arrived on the southern Kerala state coast on May 29—two days earlier than usual. Later, its development halted for more than a week.

According to information gathered by the India Meteorological Department, states in central India that cultivate cotton, soybeans, and sugar cane experienced up to a 54% reduction in rainfall in June compared to the usual.
