While the entire nation is celebrating her victory, she has found an appreciation for a rather unusual quarter. The athlete has an admirer in Chris Hemsworth who plays the mythical superhero ‘Thor’ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Hemsworth’s appreciation for India’s iconic athlete was in response to a tweet that posed a question with reference to Thor’s hammer – Mjolnir. Former journalist Saurabh Sinha took to his Twitter account to share a tweet shared by Chanu on how difficult it was for her to lift the 201kg weight and expressing her gratitude to the county.
Sinha retweeted Chanu’s tweet saying that it was time for Thor to give up his hammer and tagged the Hollywood superstar. “Time for Thor to give up his hammer,” Sinha wrote in his retweet.

Hours after Sinha’s tweet, Hemsworth responded by saying that Chanu was a worthy inheritor of the mighty hammer. The Australian actor congratulated the athlete from Manipur and went on to call her a legend. “She is worthy! Congrats, Saikhom, you legend,” read Hemsworth’s response to the tweet.

Chanu ended with a total lift of 201kg (88kg+113kg) which is considered to be her best till date. She aced her national record with 88kg in the snatch section. The celebrated weightlifter is widely known for her snatch technique. Chanu also lifted twice her body weight – 109kg and 113kg in the clean and jerk manner at the Commonwealth Games.
The former world champion made headlines after she grabbed the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Women’s 49 kg category. The star weightlifter is a recipient of Padma Shri and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna honours.
