Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday expressed anguish at the death of former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry, describing it as a huge loss for India’s business community.

Mistry (54) was killed on Sunday when his car hit a road divider on a bridge in Maharashtra’s Palghar district neighbouring Mumbai.

“Deeply anguished by the sudden demise of Shri Cyrus Mistry in a car accident today. His death is a huge loss for India’s business community. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and friends. May his soul rest in peace,” the Vice President Secretariat tweeted, quoting Dhankhar.

Mistry and another person travelling in the Mercedes car were killed on the spot while two others, including the driver, identified as Anayta Pandol, were injured.

The tragic end

Former Chairman of Tata Sons Cyrus Mistry was killed in a car accident in Maharashtra’s Palghar today. Mistry was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes car. The accident took place at 3.15 pm after his car hit a divider. Four people were present in the car; two died on spot and two were moved to hospital.

​Son of late Pallonji Mistry

Cyrus Mistry was the younger son of late Pallonji Mistry, head of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, a diversified conglomerate which had begun as a construction company started by Pallonji Mistry’s grandfather in the 19th century.

Ratan Tata’s first choice

Mistry replaced Ratan Tata as executive chairman after he stepped down on turning 75 in 2012. He was the sixth Chairman of Tata Sons.

​Non-Indian to lead Tata Group

Cyrus Mistry was the first non-Indian to lead Tata Group, as he held an Irish passport.

Unceremonial exit

However, his tenure as Tata Group chairman ended abruptly in 2016 amid differences between him and Tata family over running the conglomerate.
