NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Friday granted four weeks’ time to the Delhi Police to respond to a plea by Mohammed Zubair challenging his arrest/remand in a case related to an alleged objectionable tweet.
Zubair had moved the Delhi HC challenging the police remand granted by the trial court.
The Alt News co-founder was arrested last week for tweeting content hurting religious sentiments.
Cybercrime cops from Delhi said Zubair had deleted the post and they were trying to retrieve it by seizing his laptop. The mobile phone being used by Zubair has been formatted and does not have information related to the case.
He has told police that he lost the phone which was allegedly used in posting the objectionable tweet.
Deputy commissioner of police, cyber crime, Delhi, KPS Malhotra had said they were arresting Zubair under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth and language) and 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the IPC.
