NEW DELHI: Rationalisation of textbooks was done by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for speedy recovery in students learning continuum and to compensate for lost time due to prolonged school closures during the Covid-19 pandemic, the ministry of education said in reply to a written question in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
The NCERT had last month removed portions about the 2002 Gujarat riots, Emergency, Cold War, Naxalite movement and Mughal courts from its class XII textbooks, among other subjects, as part of its “syllabus rationalisation” exercise.
In her statement Annapurna Devi, junior minister for education, said: “During the Covid-19 pandemic situation, students across the stages of school education have struggled a lot.”
Devi informed the House that there is no shortage of NCERT textbooks and over four crore books have been distributed for the 2022-23 academic session.
