NEW DELHI: Proceedings of both Houses of Parliament were washed out for the second consecutive day with opposition parties demanding discussions on price rise and the withdrawal of 5% GST on essential items and the Agnipath recruitment scheme.
In Lok Sabha, question hour was disrupted with loud sloganeering by Congress, DMK, Left, and TMC among others, who entered the well of the house and held up placards against the government’s actions and demanding that the Prime Minister attemd the House and respond to the opposition’s questions.
After several atttempts to bring the House in order, Speaker Om Birla ticked off the protesting MPs and said they were flouting House rules by holding up posters and placards. He also said the opposition, which was protesting over price rise and farmers outside Parliament was refusing to dicuss the issues on the floor of the House. Birla’s comments were in the context of questions related to Minimum Support Price and farmers, which could not be taken up amid the din. When the House met again at 2pm, similar scenes were repeated, leading to the House being adjourned for the day.
Rajya Sabha witnessed similar disruptions and was adjourned until 2pm by Chairman Venkaiah Naidu. In the afternoon, when protests continued, Naidu adjourned the House for the day. Congress MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest over these issues outside Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Parliament complex, where some opposition MPs also joined them.
