BATHINDA: Late Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, alias Sidhu Moose Wala, was among those honoured by Pakistan-based literary organisation Punjabi Virsa with Waris Shah International Award on Sunday. The organisation also honoured poet Surjit Singh Patar and writer Harjinder Pal with the award, named after Punjabi Sufi poet Waris Shah, at a gathering of Punjabi writers and artists at Sheikhupura town in Pakistan Punjab. This is the 300th birth anniversary of Punjabi Sufi poet Shah.
Waris Shah International Award committee head Ilyas Ghumman stated that Moose Wala was highly popular in Pakistan Punjab for promoting Punjabi language and taking Punjabi singing to dizzying heights. “He is the first singer to get this award, which has been given posthumously”. The fans of Sidhu Moose Wala accepted the award. Moose Wala was killed at village Jawaharke near Mansa in India’s Punjab on May 29.
The award was started in 2000 with noted poet writer Amrita Pritam being bestowed on the honour in the first year.
