NEW DELHI: NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu sealed her victory in the presidential election over Yashwant Sinha by polling well over 53% votes by the end of third round itself.
The numbers were already stacked in her favour, considering the representation of NDA in Parliament and various state assemblies. She also had the support from several non-NDA parties.
Here’s how Droupadi Murmu asserted her victory over Yashwant Sinha, in each successive round of counting on Thursday:
Round 1
Votes cast by MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were the first to be counted, in Round 1.
Murmu polled 540 of the 748 votes of the MPs, while Yashwant Sinha bagged 208 votes.
With each MP having a vote value of 700 in this presidential election, Murmu received a total of 378,000 votes which is 72.19 per cent of the total valid MP votes, indicating some cross-voting in her favour, officials said.
On the other hand, Sinha’s total vote value stood at 1,45,600, which is 27.81 per cent of the total valid votes.
Votes of 15 MPs were declared invalid.
Round 2
Votes of MLAs from 10 states were counted in the second round.
While Murmu received votes of 809 MLAs out of a total of 1138 MLAs in 10 states, with a vote count of 1,05,299, 329 MLAs with vote count of 44,276 voted for Sinha, in the second round.
Among the states where votes were counted includes Andhra Pradesh, where Murmu received almost all the votes. Votes of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand MLAs were also counted.
After this round, Murmu’s vote value reached 4,83,299, while her rival Yashwant Sinha stood at 1,89,876.
Round 3
The third round took Droupadi Murmu past the 50% mark and sealed her victory in the presidential election.
She received the votes from 812 MLAs, against Sinha’s 521.
Her vote count after this round reached 5,77,777, which is 53 per cent of the total valid votes cast in the election on July 18.
