The monsoon’s fury touched new areas Monday as thunderstorms and floods led to two deaths in eastern Rajasthan and one in Madhya Pradesh, while 40,000 flood-affected people were evacuated in an Odisha district as heavy rain continued to pummel the eastern state.
Officials said a couple died as heavy rainfall and subsequent release of excess water from dams led to a flood-like situation in Rajasthan’s Kota and Jhalawar districts and surrounding areas. Thousands were evacuated from low-lying areas. In Kota, Jhalawar and Bundi, authorities closed schools and coaching institutes on Monday and Tuesday.
In Bhopal, a biker died and three people were injured as heavy rain accompanied by wind uprooted many trees along roads and also caused power outages in 80% of the city. Rain battered many areas for the third day, forcing authorities to close schools on Monday in some districts, including state capital Bhopal and Jabalpur. Schools and colleges will be closed on Tuesday too.
Two flights were cancelled, two diverted due to poor weather and the others suffered delays of two to seven hours, stretching late into the evening.
The IMD issued a red alert and advised people to avoid travelling in the torrential rain. Bhopal received 10 inches of rain, the second heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the city. A weather official attributed the heavy rainfall to a depression, which is moving westward. Indore and Ujjain in MP and western Rajasthan districts will likely fall in its path.
In Odisha, the swollen Subarnarekha river started receding on Monday, but it did little to alleviate the suffering of people in affected areas of Balasore district, where nearly 40,000 have been evacuated to safer locations amid widespread flooding and a drinking water crisis.
