NEW DELHI: Incessant showers caused landslides and floods in various parts of the country, leaving at least 16 people dead on Wednesday. An outbreak of cholera in Amravati district claimed five lives and affected more than 180 people over the last week, Maharashtra public health department confirmed on Wednesday. District officials said incessant rains have contaminated water sources and fuelled the outbreak since July 7. Thousands of people have also been forced to move to safety as rivers swelled and water reservoirs filled up fast. Till Wednesday, 181 patients were diagnosed in Amravati with cholera, a waterborne disease that can quickly become fatal if not treated. Of the five people who succumbed, two were women and three were men. “Three of these patients were in the age group of 24 to 40 years and two were over 70 years old,” said Pradeep Awate, state surveillance officer.
The Telangana government announced education institutes in the state would remain closed till Saturday because of continuous rain that inundated low-lying areas and damaged road links in several places.
Heavy showers in parts of south Gujarat and KutchSaurashtra regions since Tuesday left 14 people dead, while over 31,000 were evacuated so far this season. Heavy rains have also led to a rise in the water levels of various reservoirs in Gujarat, with 30 of them being filled up to 70% or more out of their total storage capacity.
Rains wreaked havoc in Maharashtra, causing a land- slide in Palghar district that killed a man and his daughter while four people were swept away in overflowing streams in the Gondia district. As many as 200 families were shifted to safety in Nanded district as the Painganga river started overflowing. In Gadchiroli too, 2,000 people from 19 villages were shifted to safety as rivers were at spate.
