Reliance Industries Ranks 45th on Forbes’ Global 2000 List, Tops Indian Retail Businesses

Reliance Industries Ltd., led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has climbed eight positions to secure the 45th spot on Forbes’ latest Global 2000 list of the world’s largest public firms. This achievement marks the highest position attained by an Indian business on the prestigious list. Forbes recently unveiled its 2023 ranking, which evaluates companies based on four key metrics: sales, profitability, assets, and market value.

JP Morgan Chase and Company, America’s largest bank with $3.7 trillion in assets, topped the list for the first time since 2011. The bank’s strong recovery from the regional banking crisis, attributed to increased deposits and the strategic acquisition of the failing First Republic Bank, contributed to its ascendancy. Meanwhile, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, which held the top spot last year, slipped to the 338th position due to unrealized losses in its investment portfolio.

Saudi Arabia’s oil giant, Aramco, claimed the second position, followed by three massive state-owned Chinese banks. Technology powerhouses Apple and Alphabet secured the seventh and tenth ranks, respectively. Reliance, the conglomerate known for its operations spanning oil to telecom, secured the highest position among Indian companies, surging from 53rd place to 45th, with impressive sales of $109.43 billion and profits of $8.3 billion.

Surpassing prominent global brands such as Procter and Gamble, BMW Group, Nestle, Alibaba Group, and Sony, Reliance emerged as the leading Indian company on the list. State Bank of India also demonstrated notable progress, advancing from 105th place in 2022 to 77th place this year. ICICI Bank rose to the 163rd position (compared to 204 in 2022), while Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) Bank secured the 128th spot (compared to 153 in 2022).

Two additional Indian companies featured on the list: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation at 226 and HDFC at 232. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) experienced a slight decline, dropping to 387th place from 384th last year. Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) made its debut at 363 overall. Notable Indian firms on the list also include Axis Bank (423), NTPC (433), Larsen and Toubro (449), Bharti Airtel (478), Kotak Mahindra Bank (502), Indian Oil Corporation (540), Infosys (554), Bank of Baroda (586), Coal India (591), Tata Steel (592), Hindalco (660), and Vedanta (687). In total, 55 Indian companies secured positions on the Global 2000 list.
