The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday arrested West Bengal Industries and Commerce Minister Partha Chatterjee in connection with the alleged West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) teacher’s recruitment scam.

The arrest was made after 26 hours of continuous interrogation by ED. Chatterjee’s close aide Arpita Mukherjee has been detained as per the reports.

The ED on Friday carried out simultaneous raids at the houses of around a dozen people, including two ministers, in connection with its investigation into the teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal and seized around Rs 20 crore in cash.

Document seizure lists have been made to sign by Chatterjee by the ED officials in the presence of his advocate while a team of doctors has been called on Saturday morning for his health check up.

Traces of several properties have been identified by ED and links of various businessmen are also under scanner, ED sources said. Meanwhile, in addition to the seizure of Rs 20 crore cash from Arpita Mukherjee’s apartment, a close aide of Partha Chatterjee, two other posh apartments and a Bunglow have been traced in the name of Mukherjee. A huge amount of gold ornaments and documents of several other properties have been found, ED sources said.

The CBI, as directed by the Calcutta High Court, is looking into the alleged irregularities committed in the recruitment of Group-C and D staff as well as teachers in government-sponsored and –aided schools on recommendations of the West Bengal School Service Commission. The ED is tracking the money trail in the scam.

“ED is carrying out search operations at various premises linked to recruitment scam in the West Bengal School Service Commission and West Bengal Primary Education Board,” the agency said on its official Twitter handle.

Following the money recovery, the party has distanced itself from Chatterjee. Kunal Ghosh, Trinamool state spokesperson, claimed that there is no connection of Trinamool Congress with the money recovered by ED. “Names of those who have come up in this case, they or their lawyers will reply on this,” Ghosh said.
