SRINAGAR: Army personnel manning the Line of Control foiled a cross-border infiltration cum smuggling bid and shot dead two men on the Indian side of the border fence in Keran sector of J&K’s Kupwara district on Tuesday. Arms, ammunition and narcotics were seized from the spot.
The slain duo, identified as Majid Chechi and Samsudin Beigh, came to receive a consignment of arms and narcotics and facilitate the infiltration of Pakistani terrorists in the general area of Rauta Nar, police said in a statement. “War-like stores seized in the operation included five AK-47 and AK-56 rifles, an AK rifle shotgun, 15 magazines, 128 7.62mm API rounds, 177 7.62mm ball rounds, 95 grenades and two packets of narcotics,” the statement added.
On noticing suspicious movement close to the border fence in the general area of India Gate – Bichu in Keran sector, a patrol party of the Army challenged the suspects. “During a subsequent search, bodies of two men were found dead close to the border fence on the Indian side with AK rifles, magazines, and narcotics packets. Some more arms and ammunition were found on the other side of the fence,” the statement said.
A case has been registered and an investigation launched in this connection.
