Warner Bros. Discovery Scores Big with ‘Superman’ and ‘F1’ Both Surpassing $500 Million at Global Box Office

Warner Bros. Discovery achieved a major box office milestone this weekend with two blockbuster films crossing the $500 million mark worldwide. DC Studios’ “Superman” grossed $502 million, while Apple’s “F1,” distributed by Warner Bros., surpassed $509 million in ticket sales.

This represented a major milestone and achievement for Warner Bros.’ DC Studios, with “Superman” being the first major theatrical release under the creative helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who took on the co-head roles of the film and TV division in late 2022. The pair has set their sights on a strategic 10-year roadmap to restore the glory of the studio’s marquee franchises, including new interpretations of very famous characters such as Superman and Batman.

In the franchise business, the “Superman” of 2025 holds fourth position in the list of highest-grossing Superman films to date. It trails Zack Snyder’s 2016 “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which leads with $874 million globally, followed by 2013’s “Man of Steel” with $669 million, and 2017’s “Justice League” with $661 million, according to Comscore data. Released just two weeks ago, “Superman” continues to sustain strong audience engagement across both weekends and weekdays.

Meanwhile, Apple’s “F1” marks a significant achievement for the tech giant’s evolving media business. Earlier this month, the film became Apple’s highest-grossing theatrical release, surpassing Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon,” which grossed $221 million during its 2023 run. Apple’s relatively limited slate of wide theatrical releases includes titles like “Killers of the Flower Moon” ($158 million worldwide), “Fly Me to the Moon” ($42 million), and “Argylle” ($96 million).

A key driver of “F1”’s success has been its strategic partnership with IMAX. Prior to production, Apple and the film’s creative team secured exclusive access to IMAX’s cutting-edge camera technology and negotiated a dedicated three-week release window in IMAX theaters, enhancing the film’s premium cinematic experience and box office appeal.

Overall, these dual successes underscore Warner Bros. Discovery’s strong positioning in the global entertainment market and highlight the growing synergy between traditional studios and emerging players in media distribution.
