Synopsis
In countries like the US and UK, people sing their national anthem without being self-conscious. In the US, in fact, singers take great pride in putting their own unique stamp on the familiar tune, whether it is at the beginning of a big game or a political rally.
Earlier this month I attended a cultural discussion in an auditorium in Kolkata that concluded in an unusual way-at least for me. The audience was asked to stand up and sing the National Anthem. There was no band, not even a recorded musical accompaniment. It was left to the audience to carry the tune and clearly enunciate the words, not stand mute or hum in an undertone.
