CHENNAI: AIADMK, at its general council meeting on Monday, put in place several measures to vest powers in former CM Edappadi K Palaniswami and keep other claimants away. To keep late Jayalalithaa’s aide VK Sasikala and her family out, a party bylaw was amended so that only someone who has been a party member for 10 years and an office-bearer at the headquarters continuously for five years can contest for general secretary.
The general secretary would be elected by the primary members of the party and candidates should be proposed by 10 district secretaries and another 10 should second him. The general secretary would be the sole authority to sign relevant forms.
In a series of amendments, the council vested the powers of coordinator and joint coordinator with the general secretary.
In a bid to portray himself as a caste-neutral leader, EPS, a Gounder from Salem district, got RB Udayakumar and OS Manian, hailing from the Thevar community dominant in the southern districts, to read out the 16 resolutions passed by the general council. OPS, who is a Thevar himself, was replaced as treasurer by another from his community, Dindigul C Sreenivasan.
In a scathing attack while delivering his speech at the general council, Palaniswami dubbed OPS as “selfish” and said he did not want anyone else to gain a position if he himself couldn’t get it. “If not Palaniswamy, a Chinnasamy in the gathering will get the position,” he said. The violence at the headquarters came in handy for EPS loyalists to dub OPS as a “betrayer” of AIADMK.
