India reports 16,935 Covid-19 cases, 51 deaths in last 24 hours; daily positivity rate crosses 6% | India News

This takes the country’s total tally of Covid-19 infections from the beginning of the pandemic to 4,37,67,534.
With an increase of 815 cases from the previous day, India’s active caseload shot up to 1,44,264 from 1,43,449, according to the Union health ministry.
The active cases comprise 0.33 per cent of the total infections.
India reported 51 Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours. India’s overall death toll has now reached 5,25,760.
With 16,069 recoveries from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the national recovery rate stands at 98.47 per cent, the health ministry said. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,30,97,510.
The weekly positivity rate has been recorded at 4.58 per cent.
Covid-19 cases continued to inch up in the country for the eighth week running, with the weekly total just short of 1.3 lakh, up over 6% from the previous week. Although the numbers remain relatively low, this is the longest sustained rise in weekly cases in India since last year’s second wave.
India on Sunday achieved a major milestone in its vaccination programme as the cumulative doses administered in the country surpassed the 200-crore mark 18 months after the vaccination scheme started on January 16, 2021.
India’s Covid-19 tally had crossed the one-crore mark in December, 2020, two crore in May, last year and three crore in June, 2021. The four crore mark was breached in January, this year.
