A dwarf brahmin, the avtar of lord Vishnu, turns into a gigantic size and covers the heaven and hell in two steps. While searching for a place to put his third step, a kind king offered him his head. The brahmin then pushed him to nether lands. The king begged the Brahmin to allow him to visit his land once a year and the Brahmin agreed. This led to the celebration of Onam every year where people welcome their king Mahabali and harvest crops.
