Empowering Veterans Through Enterprise: Texas Association Of Business Brokers Joins Hands With Owners In Honor To Fuel Veteran Business Ownership

In a strategic move designed to foster entrepreneurship among former military personnel, the Texas Association of Business Brokers (TABB) has announced a formal collaboration with Owners in Honor (OIH)—a U.S.-based nonprofit organization that supports veterans transitioning into business ownership. This new initiative aims to bridge the gap between military service and small business ownership by offering veterans access to experienced brokers, advisory support, and a clear roadmap to acquiring and managing businesses across Texas.

This unique partnership is more than just a handshake between two like-minded organizations—it’s a mission-driven alliance to shape the future of veteran entrepreneurship. As part of the agreement, participating members of TABB have pledged to offer pro bono support to veterans enrolled in the OIH program. This includes assisting in identifying viable businesses for acquisition, conducting due diligence, analyzing investment feasibility, and navigating the complexities of business transfers—all at no cost to the veteran.

Creating New Opportunities for Those Who’ve Served

With thousands of service members exiting the military each year, many seek meaningful second careers that offer autonomy, growth, and the chance to build something of their own. Business ownership is increasingly seen as a natural next step. Veterans often bring with them a strong foundation in leadership, discipline, resilience, and teamwork—qualities that align seamlessly with the challenges of entrepreneurship.

“Veterans bring discipline, leadership, and resilience into business ownership. At TABB, we believe in empowering that transition with the tools and guidance needed to succeed,” said Joshua Carnes, Vice President of TABB. “This partnership with Owners in Honor gives our members a meaningful way to give back, by helping those who have served our country become the next generation of small business owners.”

TABB, the leading professional body representing business brokers across Texas, brings decades of industry expertise to the table. With deep networks in the local business community, TABB members are uniquely positioned to offer the mentorship, insight, and strategic guidance that can spell the difference between a failed acquisition and a successful transition.

Owners in Honor: Building a Pathway to Entrepreneurship

Founded by veteran advocate and entrepreneur Patrick Flood, Owners in Honor is built on a simple, yet powerful belief—that veterans, with their proven courage, coachability, and commitment to service, are natural entrepreneurs. The organization helps veterans explore ownership opportunities through a curated framework that includes education, mentorship, and deal sourcing.

“Veterans are uniquely qualified for small business ownership,” Flood said. “They bring curiosity, coachability, courage, and commitment to community. Going through a business acquisition can be complicated without proper support. With this TABB partnership, Texas veterans are connected to experienced, proven brokers who have perspective on what makes a deal work, and who know how to get the deal over the finish line. This allows us to take a giant step in our goal of supporting the next generation of veteran business owners in Texas.”

Ramifications for Connections Beyond Veterans

This partnership is good news not only for veterans, it has important implications for the small business ecosystem in Texas. As many small business owners reach retirement age, there is growing urgency for “qualified, purposeful successors” to continue taking over the business and operating it. Veterans are frequently seen as ideal candidates for “transitions” due to their work ethic and strategic skills..

Furthermore, this project offers a replicable model for other states—and maybe even countries like India—where there is renewed interest in veteran entrepreneurship. With the large number of defense personnel with potential to retire and India’s recent entrepreneurial and start-up focus, they may be able to take inspiration from this public-private partnership model that takes a dual approach to social impact and economic development.

Overall, the partnership between TABB and OIH represents an important step toward inclusive entrepreneurship. Partnering with Veterans not only allows us to thank them for their service, but it also allows them to realise their potential further, through starting and revitalising small businesses that can drive, sustainably growth in any economy.
