NEW DELHI: Rain-related incidents killed 22 people, including at least eight children, in Maharashtra, Gujarat, MP and Telangana while thousands were evacuated and forced to stay in shelter homes amid continued showers in the states on Tuesday.
At least nine people, including three kids, were killed and 95 evacuated from flooded parts of Maharashtra. Three people, including a 13-year-old boy, died and as many others went missing as their SUV was swept off a small bridge by fast-flowing waters in Nagpur district.
Heavy downpour covered more areas of Gujarat where six people were killed in the last 24 hours, raising the toll to 69 since June 1. Over 27,800 people were evacuated from flood-hit areas and 18,225 of them remained in shelters.
Three children returning home from school were killed and five critically injured when they were struck by lightning in MP’s Agar Malwa district. Two of the dead were brothers. The students, aged 10-16, were heading home when it started raining. They took shelter under a neem tree, when lightning struck.
In Telangana, a family of four — a couple and their children, aged 4 and 6 — was electrocuted in Kamareddy amid heavy downpour after coming in contact with a live wire running above their house, taking the state’s toll in four days of showers to 10.
