NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh became the 20th member to be suspended for the remainder of this week for “tearing some papers and throwing them towards the Chair” a day ago during proceedings of the House.
The suspension of Singh followed a motion moved by junior parliamentary affairs minister V Muraleedharan for his “unruly behaviour” by shouting slogans from the well of the House and for “disregarding the authority of the Chair”. The motion was carried out by a voice vote.
Singh’s suspension comes a day after RS deputy chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh suspended 19 opposition MPs for the remainder of this week.
Singh said he had raised the Gujarat hooch tragedy issue in the House and was “repeatedly requesting the Chair and the government” for an answer on how spurious liquor is being sold in a state where prohibition is in place. “I had raised the issue yesterday also. Today (Wednesday), I gave notice under Rule 267 and was repeatedly requesting the Chair and the government for an answer… but the government did not give any answer. I was suspended,” Singh claimed.
The House could not transact any business on Wednesday. Soon after the papers were laid on the table of the House, Singh started raising some issues, but chairman M Venkaiah Naidu did not yield. He even warned that he would name the MP, who “will be sent out”. But this had no impact and the House was adjourned till noon. Soon after the House resumed, the deputy chairman made reference to “unruly” behaviour of the AAP lawmaker and a resolution to suspend him for the next two days was passed.
In the pre-lunch session, the House was first adjourned soon after it met at 11am and then twice during question hour – first for 15 minutes and then till 2pm.
Post lunch, when the Rajya Sabha resumed, Naidu urged Singh to leave the House as he was suspended. He also urged the opposition MPs to follow due procedure to raise their issues. But as his appeal had no impact and the protests continued, Naidu adjourned the House for the day.
