India is mourning the loss of one of its eminent business leaders Cyrus Mistry who died in a fatal car crash on Sunday some 120 kms away from Mumbai. After the shocking incident, details that emerged indicated that the former Tata Sons Chairman and a co-passenger who died were not wearing seat belts.
Mistry’s tragic death has now shifted the focus on the importance of road safety. Industrialist Anand Mahindra who had earlier expressed disbelief and shock, took this Twitter account to pledge in the wake of the incident.
In his tweet, he pledged to always wear seat-belts even when seated in the rear of the car. He went on to urge all to take the pledge and ended his tweet by saying that all of us owed it to our families.
“I resolve to always wear my seat belt even when in the rear seat of the car. And I urge all of you to take that pledge too. We all owe it to our families,” read Mahindra’s tweet which he had shared with a report that stated details of the accident

The 54-year-old businessman met with the accident when he was on his way to Mumbai from Udwada in Gujarat. Darius Pandole, a former independent director at Tata Group and his wife Anahita Pandole, and brother Jehangir Pandole were also travelling with Mistry.

Reportedly, Anahita, a Mumbai-based gynaecologist was driving the Mercedes. Sources from the police said that Anahita may have lost control of the vehicle while attempting to overtake another vehicle and ended up hitting a divider. Both Cyrus and Jehangir were seated in the rear seat. Anahita and Darius are currently undergoing treatment.
Immediately after the news broke out, several leaders from India Inc expressed shock and condoled the death of Mistry. The Mahindra boss took to his Twitter account to express his grief.
Mahindra said that it was hard to digest the news and that he got to know Cyrus well during his tenure as the head of the House of Tata. The 67-year-old went on to say that during his interactions with Mistry he was convinced that the late businessman was destined for greatness.

Mistry who had succeeded Ratan Tata as Chairman of Tata Sons was ousted from the post in 2016 following a boardroom coup. The development had sparked a long legal battle between the parties which eventually favoured Tata Group after Supreme Court’s intervention.
