With some organisations opposing government’s move to make the learning of maths and science subjects in English medium from Class III till Class X in all government schools of Assam, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that those opposing the move must give affidavit that their children will not study in English medium school.

Reacting to opposition of All Assam Students Union and the Asom Sahitya Sabha, he said, “We have seen children of those opposing study in English medium schools however they do not want others to study. Let them give an affidavit their children will not study in English medium school”.

He asked these organizations not to play with the sentiments of common people for their personal motives.

Assam cabinet had approved that from now both subjects will be taught in English in all government schools from Class 3 till Class 12 instead of the present practice of teaching them in Assamese, Bodo or Bengali.

Regional party, Raijor Dal, said the move will decrease the relevance of Assamese and other vernacular languages of the state.
