assam news: Assam: Jailed student’s family appeals for her release

Family members of Barshashree Buragohain, a college student, have appealed to the Assam government to release her from jail to take an exam.

Barshashree a resident of Jorhat in Assam was arrested two months back for allegedly penning a poem which appears to pro United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I)

ULFA-I or anti talk faction of ULFA is a proscribed militant outfit. Buragohain was picked up on May 17 for posting “anti-national” poems on social media.

Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad – have asked the district authorities to release the young girl who would be unable to appear for her second semester examination.

She is a student of Mathematics. DGP of Assam police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, “She was not arrested for writing a poem. She was arrested for encouraging others to join the outfit.”

G.P. Singh, Assam’s Special Director-General of Police (Law and Order) tweeted, “When someone publicly professes support for a banned organisation and declares intent of waging war against the Indian state, we are legally bound to prosecute that person. Following due process, a charge sheet shall be filed in a competent court of law. Let the law take its own.”

He stated in another tweet, “Reference arrest of Smt Barshashree Buragohain – Uriamghat PS Case No 20/2022 has been registered on 18.05.2022 and investigated. There’s a specific call to indulge in Waging war against the State in her Facebook post – “will do it again”.
