CHENNAI: The Cauvery Water Management Authority has convened a meeting on July 22 after putting off the meeting twice. It will discuss, among other things, the Mekedatu dam plan of Karnataka.
The 16th meeting of the authority will be held in New Delhi.
The members of the authority, the representatives of governments of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Union territory of Puducherry, have been requested to make it convenient to attend the meeting in physical mode and those who can’t may join it through video conferencing.
“The detailed agenda for the meeting, which was circulated earlier on June 16, remains unchanged. Mekedatu is part of the agenda,” said a source.
A TN delegation of legislature parties led by water resources minister Duraimurugan visited Union jal shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on June 22 to present the state’s opposition to the Mekedatu dam plan discussion.
Thanks to good monsoon, Tamil Nadu received excess water in the last four years, more than the stipulated annual quantum of 177.25tmcft, from Karnataka reservoirs. With no structures impeding the flow in the downstream of Krishnarajasagar dam up to the inter-state border of Biligundlu has been realizing 80tmcft of water annually.
Tamil Nadu says the construction of Mekedatu dam just ahead of Biligundlu will deprive the state of natural flow. “The construction of Mekedatu dam is a violation of court order. Also, lower riparian states sanction is required for building any structure,” an official said. The Tamil Nadu government has stoutly opposed the discussion of Mekedatu in the previous meetings.
