NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has taken cognisance of a supplementary chargesheet filed against Anup Majee, accused in the West Bengal illegal mining case, in which TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira are co-accused and have been questioned multiple times by the Enforcement Directorate.
The court has ordered for summoning the accused and beginning of the trial on August 8. Once the trial begins, Banerjee and his wife may have to appear for recording of statements as witnesses and accused in the case in the national capital. They had earlier avoided the ED’s summons for questioning in Delhi and wanted it to take place in Kolkata.
The ED said a special court here has taken cognizance of the supplementary prosecution complaint (chargesheet) on July 25 when it had arrested another accused, Gurupado Maji, and presented him before the court.
The agency, in its chargesheet, has claimed that the total “proceeds of crime identified till date is Rs 2,742.32 crore”. It has so far attached properties worth Rs 204.64 crore and has arrested three persons in the case. “After hearing at length, the court fixed the next date of hearing on August 8,” the ED said. The first prosecution complaint in the case was filed on May 13 against Vikas Mishra and Ashok Kumar Mishra — both were arrested by the ED earlier.
The ED probe was initiated on the basis of an FIR registered by the CBI against Anup Majee and other public servants for illegal excavation and theft of coal from the leasehold area of Easter Coalfields Ltd (ECL).
The agency has collected vital evidence during its over two years of investigation in the case. Some of the money trail directly links Banerjee’s wife Rujira to the laundering of ‘proceeds of crime’ outside the country.
