Starting Thursday, September 1, Delhi‘s privately-owned liquor vends will be shuttered, with the city set to make the switch to government vends.

Over 300 new government shops will replace the private ones as the city moves back to its previous excise policy, eschewing the Excise Policy 2021-22.

“Currently, there are nearly 250 private shops that will be replaced by over 300 government vends. So there will be more shops and the number will grow further in the coming days as 500 shops are planned to be opened by four Delhi government undertakings,” a senior Excise department officer was quoted as saying, by PTI.

To help customers find vends, a mobile app has been launched by the Excise department; called mAbkaridelhi, the app will be operational from September, with locations and shop timings of nearby liquor vends.

Several government vends will be located in malls and near Metro stations. The Delhi government undertakings -DTTDC, DSSIDC, DSCSC and DCCWS – have been given a target to open 700 liquor shops in the city by end of this year, according to officials.
