KARIMGANJ: A gynaecologist in an Assam government hospital has been accused of performing a caesarean section procedure on a pregnant woman, three-and-a-half-months before her due date (December), and stitching the incision after realising that the fetus was premature. The authorities of Karimganj Civil Hospital, where the incident took place August 23, Sunday said an inquiry was being conducted to ascertain the facts.
Karimganj DC Mridul Yadav said, “The report prepared by a team of doctors is now with the district joint director of health services. It will be forwarded to the directorate of health in Guwahati. The doctor reportedly did the C-section because the woman had an abortion earlier. It was believed to be a complicated pregnancy case.”
The doctor had allegedly tried to hush up the matter and asked the expectant woman’s family to not discuss it with anyone, but her relatives and neighbours came to know of it when the patient’s health worsened after she was discharged from the hospital.
An ultrasound examination on Friday revealed the fetus is unharmed, family members said.
