CHENNAI: “We are approaching 75 years of Independence and yet we could not get rid of this colonial system of using trained police officials as orderlies in the residences of higher officials. It’s shameful,” the Madras high court said Friday.
Justice S M Subramaniam further asked how could policemen trained to shoot with guns be used to cook dosa and chapatis for IPS officers and their families. “The slavery system of engaging uniformed police personnel in the residences of the higher officials must be abolished forthwith, failing which, this court will have no option but to opt for other courses of action under the provisions of the Constitution,” the judge asserted.
When the plea came up for hearing on Friday, additional advocate-general P Kumaresan submitted thayt the DGP had issued a memorandum dated August 5 instructing the police force to follow orders of the government and the court against the orderly system. He further added that 19 more personnel deputed as orderlies have been withdrawn and put on regular duty.
Recording the submissions, Justice Subramaniam said: “The DGP, except by issuing memorandum, has not ensured that the uniformed orderlies are withdrawn from the residences of police officials. Mere communication and inter-departmental communications are insufficient. Implementation of the orders of the government is of paramount importance.”
Noting that the issue has to be considered seriously, the HC said, “Trained police personnel are performing household and menial jobs in the residences of the higher officials at the cost of the taxpayers’ funds. The public has a right to question the mindset of such higher officials.”
