VARANASI: A senior advocate who was representing Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque management in the Shringar Gauri case has died of cardiac arrest. Abhay Nath Yadav was 65.
Five Hindu women have sought the right to worship the idols of Shringar Gauri and other deities in the Gyanvapi mosque premises. The mosque management committee, the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid (AIM), has opposed the plea.
Yadav, the only Hindu in the team of lawyers engaged by AIM, had argued before the district judge between May 24 and July 12. He was preparing his case ahead of the next hearing on August 4. AIM joint secretary S M Yaseen said: “Yadav’s death is shocking. We will hold a meeting to decide if we need to engage another senior advocate as his replacement. We expect to take a decision before August 4.”
