NEW DELHI: As protests against price rise and hike in GST on food items continued to disrupt Parliament, Congress Wednesday accused the government of showing obstinacy in not accepting the opposition’s demand for a discussion on the issues.
Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said the government must suspend all business and accept discussion. “The most ‘unparliamentary’ government in India’s history isn’t allowing a discussion on common man’s issues of price rise and GST on essential food items. Modiji, why are you running away from answering for your failures,” he said.
A joint opposition held a dharna in the Parliament complex ahead of the proceedings in the morning, with the coming together of rivals like Congress and TRS indicating that prospects of normal functioning of the monsoon session in the first week may be dim. Congress dubbed the GST as “grahasti sarvnash tax”.
The political temperature will anyway be high on Thursday when Congress chief Sonia Gandhi visits the ED office for questioning in the National Herald case, as Congress has planned nationwide protests against “misuse of agencies” by the Modi government.
AICC managers, MPs and senior Congress leaders met at the residence of Kharge to discuss the plan.
Congress spokesman Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “Tomorrow, as the political vendetta unleashed by the Modi-Shah duo against our top leadership continues, the entire Congress party across the country will demonstrate its collective solidarity with Sonia Gandhi in a most telling manner.”
Questioning finance minister’s defence of GST on food items, Ramesh tweeted, “‘Branded & labeled’ is very different from ‘pre-packaged & labeled’. The former affects only products of big companies priced higher and bought by middle & upper middle classes. The latter affects small businesses whose products are bought by the lower middle class & the poor.” He accused the government of penalising the aspirations of the poor.
Ramesh said that even the GST on crematoriums has been increased to 18%.
