Opposition parties start ‘non-stop 50-hour dharna’ in Parliament against suspension of MPs | India News

NEW DELHI: With suspension of 24 opposition MPs this monsoon session of the Parliament – four Congress members from Lok Sabha and 20 from Rajya Sabha, including AAP’s Sanjay Singh on Wednesday – the opposition parties started a “non-stop dharna for 50 hours” near Gandhi statue in protest.
The opposition parties – those whose members have been suspended and others who support them — will take turns in a relay system at the protest site to keep it a non-stop 50-hour, day-and-night protest that is scheduled to end on Friday noon.
A proper duty roster has been created in coordination with various parties to work out the names of the members who will sit at the agitation site with placards, put different parties as in-charge of coordinating the agitation for a few hours each and for the parties to take turns to organise meals for the protesters.
“Each party takes turns participating as equals… it is about a sense of solidarity,” said Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has volunteered to mount a tent cover for the protesters.
According to the roster, Rajya Sabha MP Thiruchi Siva (DMK) offered idli-sambhar for breakfast, DMK organised curd-rice lunch and TMC organised Roti-dal-paneer-tandoori chicken for dinner on Wednesday, besides providing fruit juice and biscuits for snacks.
On Thursday, the DMK is in charge of providing breakfast, while the TRS will organise the lunch and AAP will take care of the dinner, according to the roster. The protesters are having their meals at a nearby spot.
Each of the participating parties have worked out their own roster for members who will be sitting at the dharna site for at least two hours each.
While Congress members were not present at the Gandhi statue on Wednesday, suspended party MPs from Lok Sabha sat protesting separately at Gate no.1 of the Parliament House. Most Congress members were out on the streets agitating against the alleged misuse of Enforcement Directorate as party chief Sonia Gandhi was questioned by the agency.
