Opposition to coordinate Parliament floor strategy, may keep BJD out | India News

NEW DELHI: Opposition parties, which came together recently to put up their joint candidate for the presidential elections, have decided to coordinate their floor strategy in Parliament for the monsoon session starting on Monday and the latest trigger for them to close ranks is the new list of “unparliamentary” words which they view as a “gag order”.
Calling it an “effort to stifle the opposition voice” in the House, leaders reacted on Thursday by saying that they will defy the orders during the session. Even after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla clarified at a press conference that there was no gag order, but the words included those which have been expunged, an infuriated opposition saw adesign behind the move.
On Twitter, Rahul Gandhi defined “unparliamentary” as “words used in discussion and debates which correctly describe the PM’s handling of the government”.
While there may not be regular meetings of opposition parties, there would be complete coordination for House proceedings, TMC Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’ Brien told TOI. “There are too many issues to be taken up starting with price rise… but the Union government will not allow a discussion on any people-centric issue in Parliament. They run scared. They make a mockery of Parliament. So, presession meetings (government with opposition parties) are a sham,” he added.
The session is set to see TRS as a new entrant in the opposition camp. Though the Telangana party was earlier seen as supporting the Modi government on many issues, it has taken a decisive turn to join the opposition ranks.
However, it is not clear how far AAP will go in coordinating with the opposition. AAP kept itself out of opposition moves on presidential polls. Also with no member in Lok Sabha after Bhagwant Mann moved out to become Punjab CM, the party will have no presence in the House.
The opposition, however, have decided against reaching out to Naveen Patnaik’s BJD as it has sided with the government, said a leader.
