Ponniyin Selvan: Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan I’ set to hit IMAX screens

Movie studio Lyca Productions and IMAX Corporation have joined hands to release epic-period drama “Ponniyin Selvan I” on the IMAX screens. The movie has been helmed by ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam. “Ponniyin Selvan I” will hit the IMAX theatres in September. Notably, “Ponniyin Selvan I” will be the first Tamil movie to be released in IMAX.

IMAX is a unique set of movie projection standards where the screen’s height is smaller than the screen image width. It is a 70 mm motion picture movie format.

The story of “Ponniyin Selvan I,” directed by Mani Ratnam, is set in the early 10th Century. The movie is centered around the early life of Arunmozhi Varman, who was a Chola Prince. It was Arunmozhi Varman, who was later famed as Raja Raja Chola.

Bachchan’s Most Riveting Performances

In a career spanning over two decades, Abhishek Bachchan has given some of the finest performances. Abhishek has displayed a certain vigour, fluidity and candour in his characters. The actor who made his debut with JP Dutta’s ‘Refugee’ in 2000 went on play some memorable characters onscreen. From characters that exuded charm to roles where he successfully transitioned into the magnetic anti-hero, Abhishek has come a long way. Mani Ratnam and Lyca Production’s Subaskaran have jointly produced “Ponniyin Selvan I.” The movie is based on the novel of Kalki Krishnamurthy, which has the same name and was published in 1955. The film will be released in two parts.

“Ponniyin Selvan I” is a multi-starrer flick. Its cast includes Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karti, Sobhita Dhulipala, Trisha, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Vikram Prabhu, Rahman, Jayaram, R. Sarathkumar, and R. Parthiban, among others.

While talking about the collaboration, IMAX Entertainment President Megan Colligan said that the company is committed to the Indian cinema, and “Ponniyin Selvan I” is perfect for diversifying and enhancing the company’s portfolio at the international level.

Expressing the same sentiments, Lyca Production’s Chief Executive Officer Aashish Singh stated that the production house was elated that “Ponniyin Selvan I” would be watched by people worldwide. He added that the release of “Ponniyin Selvan I” on IMAX screens would do justice to the vision of the makers of the movie. “Ponniyin Selvan I” will hit the theatres on September 30.
