NEW DELHI: The race to Rashtrapati Bhavan will be a direct fight between NDA-nominee Droupadi Murmu and the opposition’s common candidate Yashwant Sinha. Of the 94 presidential aspirants who filed their nomination papers, 92 were knocked out of the race at various stages for submitting faulty applications, leaving only two – Murmu and Sinha – in the contest.
Elections for the President of India will be held on July 18, coinciding with the day on which the Monsoon session of Parliament begins. Counting of votes will be held on July 21.
Rajya Sabha secretary general P C Mody, who is also the returning officer for the presidential polls, said the Election Commission received a total of 115 nomination papers for 94 persons till Wednesday. Of these, 107 were rejected for not meeting the criteria. Four sets, each filed by Murmu and Sinha, were found complete and were accepted.
