The Department of Consumer Affairs on Saturday released the legal metrology (packaged commodities), (second amendment) rules 2022 under which it allowed electronic products to declare certain mandatory declarations through the QR Code for a period of one year, if not declared in the package itself.

As per the amendment, the industry can use a QR Code to declare detailed information in digital form.

While the other illustrative information can be provided to the Consumer via the QR Code, it mandates disclosure of critical information to be made effectively on the label in the package.

The department aims to enable greater use of technology in this digital era to declare the such declaration through the QR Code, which can be scanned to view declarations like the address of the manufacturer, packer, or importer, the common or generic name of the commodity, its size and dimensions, and customer care information other than a phone number and email address.

Previously, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities), Rules 2011 required all prepackaged commodities, including electronic products, to declare all mandatory disclosures on the package.
