Rajya Sabha clears bill to validate family courts in Himachal Pradesh and Nagaland | India News

NEW DELHI: The Parliament on Thursday passed a bill which which seeks to extend statutory cover to family courts in Himachal Pradesh and Nagaland and retrospectively validating all actions taken by them. The amended bill after getting assent of the President will be notified and will come as a big relief for thousands of people involved in such cases in these two states.
Proceedings in Lok Sabha were washed out as the House suffered repeated disruptions and was adjourned for the day soon after 2 pm amid sloganeering by Congress members against the alleged misuse of government agencies. After the House met at 2 pm, papers were laid on the table and two resolutions adopted amid the din.
Though the opposition raised the issue in Rajya Sabha as well, the House passed the family courts bill by a voice vote amid sloganeering by the opposition, led by Congress members, who alleged misuse of the Enforcement Directorate by the government.
Replying to the debate, Union law and justice minister Kiren Rijiju said that amendments were required considering the long list of pending cases. He said currently there are 715 family courts in the country with over 11 lakh pending cases. The minister said the government wants that there should be at least one family court in every district. for speedy disposal of cases. Rijiju said he spoke about this at the recently held meeting of judicial officers and judges at the national level.
According to the Family Court Act of 1984, it is mandatory for a state government to set up a family court for every city or a town whose population exceeds 10 lakh.
