NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday said that no word has been banned for use in Parliament, amid a raging controversy on the matter.
Some recent reports, quoting government sources had said that words like ‘ashamed’, ‘abused, ‘betrayed’, ‘corrupt’, and ‘incompetent’ have been declared unparliamentary and would be considered unsuitable for use in Parliament.
Clarifying on how the list of words were compiled, Birla said the list only includes words that have been expunged on orders of the House speakers during sessions of Parliament or state assemblies.
Government sources on Thursday echoed Birla and said “it is not a suggestion or order”, as the terms have already expunged by presiding officers of Parliament and state legislatures.
A booklet by the Lok Sabha Secretariat has categorised words like ‘ashamed’, ‘abused, ‘betrayed’, ‘corrupt’, and ‘incompetent’ in its latest version, reports had said.
The opposition slammed the government, alleging that words have been picked for inclusion in the list to stifle criticism of the Modi dispensation.
