Samsung has applied for the ₹12,195 crore-telecom equipment production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme after giving it a miss last year, as the Korean company looks to benefit from the programme to locally make 4G and 5G gear and other equipment for sales both in India and overseas.

The scheme, which was amended in April this year to facilitate design-led manufacturing for which ₹4,000 crore was set aside, is currently taking fresh applications. The last date for submissions is August 25.

ET’s emailed query to Samsung remained unanswered at the time of going to press.

Currently, Samsung is not manufacturing telecom equipment in the country but once selected under the PLI scheme, it will start making the equipment locally, telecom department officials said. Samsung would then join other global manufacturers such as Cisco, Jabil, Flex and Foxconn, besides European telecom equipment vendors Nokia and Ericsson in applying for the PLI scheme.

As per industry executives, Samsung gave a miss to the scheme last year because of lack of opportunities in the equipment supply space.
