NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has given a go-ahead to Ganesh Chaturthi rituals at the Idgah Maidan in Bengaluru.
A three-judge bench comprising Justices Indira Banerjee, AS Oka and MM Sundresh heard the petition filed by Karnataka Waqf Board challening the permission for rituals granted by the Karnataka High Court
The plea was mentioned by senior advocate Kapil Sibal who sought an urgent hearing moved by the Waqf board. He apprised the court about the division bench of the Karnataka high court order and said unnecessary tension will be created if the rituals are allowed.
The Karnataka HC had granted permission to the state government to consider and pass appropriate directions on the applications seeking the use of Idgah Maidan at Chamarajpet. The division bench passed the order on the state’s plea challenging a single judge bench order directing to maintain the status quo.
The controversy blew up after the Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) announced that it will not allow Ganesh festival rituals at Idgah Maidan.
However a Karnataka minister asserted that the organisation has no locus standi in the matter as the land belonged to the government.
“It is shameful that for 75 years, the tricolour was not hoisted at Idgah Maidan in Bengaluru. All land in the state belongs to the Revenue department. The allotment to any institution has to be done by it. In the case of Idgah Maidan, the Revenue department has not allotted the said land to any party, it is very much government property,” revenue minister R Ashok had said.
