Sonia Gandhi bereaved; President Murmu, PM Modi and others offer condolences | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi‘s mother Paola Maino died on Saturday, the party said on Wednesday. She was in her 90s and living in her home in Italy.
AICC spokesman Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “Smt Sonia Gandhi’s mother, Paola Maino passed away at her home in Italy on Saturday… The funeral took place on Tuesday.”
President Droupadi Murmu, PM Modi and other senior politicians on Wednesday expressed condolences over passing away of Gandhi’s mother. “Sad to learn about the passing away of Paola Maino, mother of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. My heartfelt condolences to her and her family,” President Murmu tweeted.

PM Modi said, “Condolences to Sonia ji on the passing away of her mother. May her soul rest in peace. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the entire family.”

Ex-Punjab CM Amarinder Singh said, “Share my heartfelt condolences with Sonia ji on the sad demise of her mother.”
When the Gandhi family left for travel abroad last week, Congress announced that it was for Sonia’s annual medical check-up, and that the family will also visit her home town to see her ailing mother.
