“We have established a study centre to undertake extensive proactive research in new and upcoming areas,” a senior Trai official told ET, adding that the scope would further include analysis of facts, and bringing out white papers periodically.
The new regulatory division would function as an internal wing, and initially employ in-house human resources as research associates.
“This will act as an independent division, and we plan to come out with some forward-looking papers, and undertake research into some extensive matters such as digital inclusion,” the official added.
The sector regulator has roped in Broadcasting and Cable Services (B&CS) advisor Anil Kumar Bharadwaj as the director general (DG) of the new unit, called Centre of Study and Research or CoSR. In the meantime, Trai has also elevated Syed Tauseef Abbas as principal advisor-Broadcasting & Cable Services.
Trai, by virtue of regulatory tasks, has been doing continuous research on multiple areas in the twin sectors, and closely keeping an eye on best practices worldwide.
