According to a PTI report, Akshay Kumar’s “Laxmmi Bomb”, “Sadak 2”, featuring Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt-starrer “Bhuj: The Pride of India” are among the Bollywood films that are headed for a direct release on the streamer Disney+ Hotstar as theatres remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The only option

“It (number of COVID-19 cases) is increasing day-by-day instead of subsiding. In this situation do you think the theatres will open? And even if they do and ‘Sadak 2’ is released, will people go to watch it? People have to protect their families. Today, life is more important,” Mukesh Bhatt told PTI. (Representative Image)

Setting a precedent

Director Shoojit Sircar earlier released his Amitabh Bachchan-Ayushmann Khurrana starrer “Gulabo Sitabo” on Amazon Prime Video, which also acquired Vidya Balan’s Shakuntala Devi biopic and five other films from the south including “Penguin”, “Law”, “French Biryani”, “Sufiyum Sujathayum”. “Gunjan Saxena – The Kargil Girl”, starring actor Janhvi Kapoor, is also set to bypass a theatrical release and stream directly on Netflix.

A disappointed trio

Multiplex Association of India (MAI), and theatre chains PVR and INOX had expressed their disappointment at the decision of the filmmakers to skip cinema halls at the time of “Gulabo Sitabo’s” release.

A special experience

“Theatres are a special experience. So, they will always exist and thrive. But the potential of the industry can’t be capped by the number of release windows and theatres available,” said Uday Shankar – President, The Walt Disney Company APAC and Chairman, Star & Disney India.

The ‘Warrior’ has brought a new perspective to Telugu cinema and has been admired by the audience. Linguswamy and his exceptional direction has made “Warrior” a successful venture in the Telugu cinema industry.
