NEW DELHI: India has 1,043 universities and over 42,000 colleges for its ambitious young population.
In 1950, India had only 27 universities and 578 colleges.
According to government data, student enrolment has grown by 11.4% from 2015-16 to 2019-20. In the same period, female enrolment in higher education has increased by 18.2%.
Total enrolment in higher education stood at 3.85 crore in 2019-20 as compared to 3.74 crore in 2018-19, registering a growth of 11.36 lakh (3.04 %). Total enrolment was 3.42 crore in 2014-15.
Gross Enrolment Ratio — the percentage of students belonging to the eligible age group enrolled in higher education — in 2019-20 was 27.1% against 26.3% in 2018-19 and 24.3% in 2014-2015.
