NEW DELHI: India has seen a significant decline in Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in the past 75 years.

IMR has reduced from 146 per 1,000 live births in 1951 to 30 per 1,000 live births in 2019.
Community –based care of newborns, universal immunisation and appropriate feeding practices for infants have been critical to bring down infant deaths. In 2016, the government launched the Mothers’ Absolute Affection scheme to promote early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months.
